Eversheds comment: First global certification for Shariah experts
Leading Islamic finance scholars are working towards a universal standard for Islamic finance advisers and the issuance of permits by an international committee. Amjad Hussain, partner at international law firm Eversheds, comments:
“The issue of qualification for Shariah advisors has been topical for a long while now. Some commentators believe that by "regulating" Shariah advisors it will mean that there will be greater uniformity in the fatwas that are passed. This view has limited merit because Shariah law does permit a difference of opinion amongst rightly guided scholars. However, any step that is taken to ensure that Shariah scholars are better equipped to advise on the often complicated and sensitive issues that they are being asked to consider is welcomed.
“The debate around the education of Shariah scholars should help the industry to focus more upon the higher purpose of the Islamic finance and how it fits in with the wider world. This will a good move forward for the industry and its stakeholders.”
