Eversheds advises Manchester City Council on £95m revamp

International law firm Eversheds has advised Manchester City Council on the appointment of construction solutions provider Laing O’Rourke to complete a £95m refurbishment and partial restoration of the Grade II* listed Town Hall Extension and Central Library.

The complex task of transforming the city’s Central Library and Town Hall Extension includes a programme of refurbishment and partial restoration of the 1930s buildings, which is expected to be completed by 2014. Working closely with the English Heritage, the project will update the buildings while retaining the original architecture.

The project is required to deliver immediate economic benefits to the region as part of the negotiations. As a result, it will create 66 apprenticeships and utilise a procurement model targeting local businesses.

The Eversheds team was led by construction partner Simon Chamberlain.

Simon said;

“This is a significant project for Manchester City Council as two of the most iconic buildings in the city undergo a revamp. The investment will make the Town Hall Extension and Central Library more accessible to the public, but will also have a positive impact on the local environment. We worked closely with the Council to ensure that the appointed construction partner is able to provide a seamless quality service.”

John Lorimer at Manchester City Council said:

“The signing of this contract marks a significant milestone, not only in the transformation of these Grade II*listed buildings but in demonstrating our commitment to delivering first-class services to our customers. The experience and skills of the Eversheds team proved to be invaluable.”
