Eversheds advises on the purchase of former Southern Cross care homes
International law firm Eversheds has advised the charity Royal Mencap Society on its acquisition of seven former Southern Cross care homes.
Following extensive negotiations with the landlord for the seven care homes (with a combined annual turnover in excess of £10million), Mencap has acquired the homes which specialise in care for residents with learning difficulties.
Mencap, advised by Eversheds managed to complete the transaction in the first wave of home transfers from Southern Cross. The transaction process was complex, involving in excess of 3000 legal documents.
The Eversheds team was led by partners Paul Pugh and Huw Rolant-Jones assisted by senior associate Gareth Ashfield, associate Elizabeth Fevyer and solicitor Iain Wilton.
Paul Pugh, Head of Third Sector Services at Eversheds commented:
“This is a great example of how an innovative third sector organisation can step up to deliver niche services. Most importantly, Mencap has ensured the seamless continuity of care for residents following the demise of Southern Cross. We look forward to advising them on future matters.”
Lynda Rowbotham, Head of Legal Advice at Mencap added:
“We are very pleased to have acquired these homes, ensuring continuity of care for the residents concerned. Eversheds provided an excellent and holistic service in guiding us through numerous complexities associated with the purchase.”
