Eversheds supports DEC East Africa Crisis Appeal
The Eversheds Business Lawyers Charitable Trust, established by the international law firm to support and fund charitable activities by people in the business, has pledged £5,000 to the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) East Africa Crisis Appeal.
The DEC East Africa Crisis Appeal is calling for donations for the 10 million people suffering from the catastrophic drought in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and South Sudan. Supporting the work of DEC’s members in affected areas, the Appeal will help to provide life saving aid such as food, water, care for malnourished children and medical treatment.
The Eversheds Business Lawyers Charitable Trust is funded each year by donations from equity partners in the UK and managed by a board of Trustees. Each year the Trustees donates to the firm’s national charitable partner Barnardo’s, as well as supporting homeless charity CRISIS, international charities such as Unicef and Medecins Sans Frontieres, and matching the employee fundraising by Eversheds offices. More than £210,000 was donated to charitable causes in 2010/11 and additional payments were made to support the relief of global disasters such as the earthquakes in Haiti and Japan and the floods in Pakistan.
Charitable Trust Chairman and Partner Alan Meredith said:
“More than 10 million people are believed to be affected by the crisis which has hit East Africa and there is widespread concern about a shortfall in international aid going to the region. Over the past year we have supported similar appeals by DEC and we hope that our contribution helps to make a difference to the lives of those affected by the drought.”
