Eversheds throws down the gauntlet on women in law

International law firm Eversheds is leading a national cross-profession debate entitled "Women in the Law". The debate, which will take place as part of the WOW - Women of the World Festival at the Southbank Centre will serve as a call for concerted action to stem the unacceptable female attrition rate across the entire legal profession.

WOW is being launched the weekend following "International Women's Day". The Festival will celebrate women and their achievements across the arts, media, politics, science and business and is being supported by some high profile individuals including Annie Lennox, Kate Nash, Paloma Faith and presenter of Woman’s Hour, Jenni Murray.

The Women in law debate will take place on Saturday 12th March between 12 noon and 1.30 PM

Chaired by Eversheds Partner Denise Jagger, the panel will include:

  • Baroness Helena Kennedy QC
  • The Rt Hon The Baroness Scotland of Asthal QC - Shadow Attorney General House of Lords
  • Lucy Scott-Moncrieff - Solicitor and Deputy Vice President of the Law Society
  • Sandie Okoro - General Counsel, Baring Asset Management Limited
  • Kim Hollis QC - Incoming Chair of the Equality and Diversity Committee of the Bar Council and Chair of the Equality and Diversity Committee of the Criminal Bar Association
  • Caroline Stroud - Global HR Partner, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer
  • Frances Kirkham - formerly Senior Circuit Judge and member of the Judicial Appointments Committee
  • Sara Nathan - Broadcaster, Member of Judicial Appointments Commission
  • Ingrid Simler QC - Chair of the Bar Council’s Diversity and Equality Committee
  • Dame Janet Gaymer QC - formerly Commissioner for Public Appointments and a law firm Senior Partner

Denise Jagger, commented:

We have much to celebrate as a profession with over 50% of the intake into law firms and the Bar being women. The panel will be debating what concerted action can be taken to stem the unacceptable attrition rate by bringing about a change in culture, attitude and working practices. Without such action we will continue to see talented female lawyers failing to achieve their full potential.

Notes to Editors:

About WOW – Women of the World festival

WOW – Women of the World is Southbank Centre’s new annual three-day festival launching in 2011. The event will run from Friday 11 – Sunday 13 March across the Southbank Centre site (including the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, The Clore Ballroom and various function rooms and foyers). WOW – Women of the World was set up by Southbank Centre Artistic Director Jude Kelly OBE to promote, celebrate and recognise the achievements of women and explore some of the challenges facing them. The festival has two strands – one includes performances such as gigs, films, comedy, classical music, theatre and readings. The other is a conference with debates, talks, networking and mentoring opportunities, workshops and lots of fun, free things to do.
